Notes from the Potsdam Après Ski Club's 25th Anniversary Celebration

Present: Tellie & Dave Bray, Ellen & Bob Burns, Pat & Steve Crist, Marta & Gabor Forgacs, Sue & Bob Gibbs, Carolyn & Gene Kaczka, Trish & Bill Lewis, Judy & Doc Lowell, Dorothy & Bill Mein, Susan & Bob Meyer, Cathy & Bill Petersen, Buckley Riggs, Margaret and Jim Thorp.

Ski Club celebrated its 25th year at the Brays. Dessert was a cake (made by Lois McCasland) with a skier coming down a mountain. The four charter members present (Tellie & Dave Bray and Ellen & Bob Burns) made the first cut into the cake. Bob thought the mountain looked tricky to go down, so he decided to cut the mountain the same way he skis - straight down the middle! However, his civil engineering skills failed him as he couldn't get the knife to go into the cake. Once Ellen gained her composure, she took over the final cuttings and earned the title as the fastest cake cutter in the East!!

Lorraine and Ed Kear called from Florida.

In recognition of the Club's 25 years, Dorothy shared highlights from the past 25 years of minutes, along with some props and presentations: A broken ski pole (once owned by Dianne Roth-Stienrotter) to Tellie Bray, a whistle to call meetings to President Bill Mein, long lost silverware belonging to Susan Meyer, and presented the Crists with an article out of the paper, by inventor Don Featherstone, on the tacky things people do to the hollow pink flamingos. Dorothy read highlights from the article on the 40th anniversary of the birth of the hollow plastic pink flamingo; the inventor felt they become tacky only after the things people do to them. After mentioning the Pink Flamingos that the Crists had wrapped up for the ornament exchange in 1986, Pat presented the Brays with a gift, which she hoped would be the Club's mascot. Tellie had the honor of opening 2 more pink flamingos, decked out with mittens. Now that's tacky!!!!

Letters from past presidents (Bruce & Barb Conroe, Al & Barb Simpkins, Kaye & George Sullivan) were read.

After much laughter and reminiscing over the past 25 years of minutes, Doc Lowell mentioned that he didn't think anyone knew that he was an accomplished harmonicist and proceeded to play the harmonica, along with telling jokes between a few chords now and then for about 20 minutes. Definitely a one-man comedy show, which was a surprise and enjoyed by everyone. (As one member noted, "Doc came out of the closet!!!)

Solos which were "snappy" tunes were sung by Bob Burns, Bob Gibbs and Doc Lowell.

Definitely a meeting that no one wanted to see come to an end.

Respectfully -- Dorothy Mein
