"Cross Border Garden"
This wall hanging was a "Round Robin" challenge involving the guild to
which I belong and a guild across the border in Canada. The originator was
to produce a 12" by 12" block of their choice and each of the next 3 quilters
was to add a border and/or embelish the piece in some way. I began with seven 3-D
flowers in the center. The first border was appliqued "Maple Leaves" and embroidered
accents. The next added appliqued butterflies on fabric I had sent along. The last
added interior prairie points in her border,
and sent along enough fabric for binding to match the border.
When it was returned to me for finishing, I decided it needed more 3-D flowers and
a few more butterflies, also 3-D. I used the embroidery design for some of the
quilting and added trapunto for more impact. The border quilting outlined the
design flowers.
I did my original part by hand and everyone else did so as well, even though
they might prefer machine work.
After a showing in the guild show, the piece was a gift for a granddaughter.
All work done by hand. Size 30" by 30" Begun in 2000 and finished in 2001.
